PostSubject: Canning pears!   October 27th 2011, 17:13

So I channeled my inner grandmother yesterday and decided to can some pears! Yeah, I know...so not me!

We moved into this house in June and we have two big pear trees! They were so full and were dropping all over the ground and I felt bad about them just going to waste. We couldn't possibly eat that many or even give that many away. So I decided to can some. We always have a bunch of family in for the holidays and the kids will go crazy over them!

I was actually proud of myself! It was my first canning experience!

That's wonderful Sheri! I can quite a bit in the fall too. I didn't get any pears this year though....I did LOTS of apples!

I must have been feeling really inspired because I got up yesterday morning and made some PEAR BUTTER!

My nephew, who will be visiting at Christmas, absolutely loves apple butter so I thought why not try pears...I'm sure he'll love that too!

Wow, that's awesome Sheri! Good for you!
I've never tried to make apple or pear butter....I still have a ton of apples. I'll have to look for a recipe Smile

This pear butter recipe I found tastes wonderful and is super easy to make. I found several that were really hard and a lot of steps...not for me! I just threw all the ingredients in a crock pot! I eventually transferred to a big stockpot on the stove and it went much quicker but it was easy, easy. If you want it let me know! I imagine it would work for apples too.

I just found a recipe in my canning cook book. The hubby thinks it sounds like a great idea....I'm not sure I want to do anymore canning. I was going to dehydrate the rest of my apples *sigh* Hummm.....now I have to decide what to do.
