PostSubject: Doolittle Raiders   April 20th 2012, 14:01

For those that don't know, where I live we have a small airfield named after the man who first put a light on an airplane because this is where he lived. His name was Warren Grimes and so the airfield is named after him. Where I work is actually his old factory, it is just now owned by Honeywell but we still make lighting and electrical units for airplanes!

Since last friday we have been constantly hearing the sounds of airplanes overhead because this past weekend the largest gathering (about 20) of B-25's has landed in our little town in preparation for the tribute to the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force (NMUSAF), near Dayton. The Doolittle Reunion will mark the 70th anniversary of the Raiders’ famed raid on Japan, four months after Pearl Harbor. We also had the world’s last remaining airworthy Zero A6-M2 – the type of fighter Japan used to attack Pearl Harbor.

I have never been one to really enjoy airshows like the blue angles or anything, but I have to say seeing (and hearing) these B-25's flying overhead has been amazing. Sometimes you will just see a single one but several times I have seen several of them in a V formation and it just an awesome sight. And to get to see them so close is so cool. They are all painted up and everything. They did a big event at the airfield where we could go see them and where even taking people on rides (for a price of course). Such a cool thing for our small community.

Oh that would have been so cool to see! We're due to visit the AF museum again; it's been a few years since we've been there.

That is so neat!! I have never seen an air show, but have always heard how cool they are from others who have seen them. I think that's a fabulous thing for your community!

OH my gosh!! my husband would love it!
My dad flew B-24's and B-17's for the USAAF in WW2--Dad enlisted the day Pearl harbor was bombed- He was a 3rd year college student and went into the Army Air Core as an officer..
We have been to the Dayton Museum-- I am thinking my dh needs a vacation day this week to go see those planes!

Sherrie--are those planes there on the base for the week?

That is really cool! I went to a Navy Football game and the Blue Angels were there and it was so so neat.

What an awesome thing to be around/part of!

Wow! That is so cool! I would love to go to an Air Show. They have them in Columbus, which isn't far from us.
